Summer is definitely in full-swing here in Wisconsin! But while we’re all enjoying the warm weather and spending time outdoors, the hottest season of the year can also wreak havoc on your vehicle’s gas mileage.
Here are a few tips on how to avoid racking up extra fuel costs when you’re on the road this summer:
Check Your Air Filter.
Driving around with a dirty air filter can decrease fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent, meaning you’re potentially spending an extra $0.30/gallon every time you fill up your tank.
Check Your Tire Pressure.
When your tires aren’t properly inflated, your engine has to work a bit harder and, as a result, your MPGs are affected. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency by 3.3% which saves you an average of $0.12/gallon at the pump.
Lighten Your Load.
Carrying around an extra 100 pounds in your trunk reduces your fuel efficiency by 1-2% so keep your golf clubs, softball gear, etc. at home when they’re not being used.
This is especially true for longer road trips – if you go 60mph instead of 70mph on the highway, you’ll use less gas andpossibly avoid an expensive speeding ticket!
Keep it in Cruise!
Accelerating less frequently means you’re burning less fuel so, when possible, activate your vehicle’s cruise control feature to optimize gas mileage.
